A fatal collision in March between a motorcycle and pickup truck in Toledo once again highlights the importance of road safety and how other drivers must be better aware of motorcyclists. The nighttime crash killed the motorcycle driver and injured a passenger.
As spring approaches and weather warms, we can expect to see more and more motorcyclists on Ohio roads and highways. Once again, the bumper sticker “Start Seeing Motorcycles” and its message must get the attention of all motorists. Safety is crucial on the road, and motorists must be on the alert to motorcycles and willingly share the road.
Safe driving remains crucial on the road
In 2018, a total of 144 people died in motorcycle-related accidents in the state, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. That number represents an 8% decrease from the previous year. However, the number of motorcycle accident fatalities remains too high.
Safety, sometimes, is ignored by motorists who cause collisions with motorcycles. Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable when they collide with much heavier cars, pickups and SUVs. Here are some of the reasons that crashes occur between motor vehicles and motorcycles:
- Failure to see motorcycles and not sharing the road with them.
- Failure to pay attention as inattentive driving seems on the rise, especially as many drivers text behind the wheel
- Drowsy driving has led to many accidents. Staying alert behind the wheel is critical.
- Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Failing to abide by traffic laws. Reckless drivers blow through stop signs and traffic signals, ignoring everyone around them.
Motorcyclists know that they always must remain vigilant. They do not want to be another statistic. As long as all motorists practice safe driving habits, fewer mishaps, accidents and tragedies can occur. Please enjoy a safe motorcycle season.
